Caterpillar is an outdoor sculpture located in City Green, an urban park beside City Square Mall. It was commissioned by the National Arts Council and conceptualised by Singaporean visual artist Tay Bee Aye. We were brought in as project manager and consultant on the construction of the piece, mediating the artist’s 2D design and translating it into a feasible reality. Taking a host of site-specific and logistical factors into consideration, we worked closely with Bee Aye and City Square Development to build and operationalise this installation.
Materialised, Caterpillar is 15 metres long and 2.3 metres high. With its 30 compartments zigzagging mostly off the ground and tilted at various angles, it is an arresting structure, withstanding the elements just as much as it seems to stretch the laws of physics. To add a bit of function and interaction, we proposed converting the segments of the caterpillar body into poster boxes. These are made available to local arts organisations for free, arising in a valuable community billboard that bridges the public and the arts in the centre of the city.
